Pain Relief Without Pills

There is so much more that we can do to help ourselves when in pain. Indeed, we each already know how to do some of this. Think distraction, think child gets lollipop from the doctor or dentist, think parent smacks the ground after a child has fallen and exclaims, "bold ground!"

At HealthierSelf we have  assembled a range of approaches for those who must manage or relieve pain on a longer term basis. Some are simple visualisations that you can learn easily. Others are more in-depth and require a little practice. Once learned however, they will offer you a level of respite that we believe will help you enormously. 

 

The focus is on the structure of how we each experience pain - whatever you are experiencing we can help.

So, yes, we can use our minds to relieve pain, to enhance our medication or even to influence the course of our treatment plans.

Fibromyalgia (personally speaking)

Fibromyalgia ("FM" or "Fibro") is a medical condition characterised by chronic widespread pain and a heightened pain response. Other symptoms include sleep problems, trouble with memory and concentration, and tiredness and fatigue to a degree that normal activities are affected. Some people also report experiencing restless legs syndromebowel or bladder problemsnumbness and tingling and sensitivity to noise, lights or temperature.

That's the official line. From my point of view, it was an experience I never want to have ever again. Not being able to function properly, either in thought or movement, was a major worry. At one point all I could see was extreme fatigue and pain. Even putting on a pair of socks in the morning took so, so much. That was a such a tough time. 

An invisible condition has an added complication. Along the way, I met other Fibro sufferers and some of those living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). It's tough for folks. Not only have they to deal with their ongoing painful and life limiting condition, they must also field questions and sometimes hurtful comments from those who simply do not understand.

A significant HealthierSelf goal then, is to help shed some light for folk whose lives are made difficult by these conditions. That light is in the form of approaches and techniques that we believe give people even just a little more control.
